South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of interactive, music, and film festivals and conferences that takes place in Austin, Texas. SXSW began in 1987, and has been expanding every year.
We’ve talked before about dress up games, so I figured I’d highlight one of the coolest/nerdiest parts of SXSW: the cosplay competition! Cosplay is short for costume play. It’s a performance art in which people create costumes and wear them with accessories to represent their favorite characters from anime, videogames, comics—pretty much any medium with creatively dressed characters.
I’ve never cosplayed myself, but it’s a huge niche industry. People go crazy for it. Conventions like ComicCon have become known for epic costumes. Unfortunately, that sometimes means too many sweaty men dressed up in shrunken Spiderman suits. This video is different. These guys aren’t playing dress up games; they’re the all-stars of the cosplay community:
She had the best costume—no question about it—but honestly, I wouldn’t know where to begin with even the simplest cosplay. I’m a noob—I’ll admit it.
Have you ever been to a convention? Have you ever created a costume and wore it to said convention?
