Where’s the Actors?
“You shall not pass!”, is likely the most recognizable movie line since Cher demanded that Nicholas Cage “Snap out of it” in Moonstruck. An entire population of LARP sword enthusiasts and fans of sword training collectively cheered the J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation. Lord of the Rings (LOTR) without question launched more than one career. One person who was thrust into the A list stratosphere is Viggo Mortensen, or Aragon as the world came to know him. So he should be elated, right? Wrong.
Turns out that Mr. Mortensen is an actor – who likes to act with other actors. He’s come out very vocally against the filmmaking methods of director Peter Jackson. He claims that LOTR 2 and 3 were a mess and so disorganized and CGI heavy that there was no organic quality between actors. In other words, acting. According to Mortensen, if it weren’t for the enormous financial success of the first film, there would have been no funding for the extensive reshoots on 2 and 3 – banishing them straight to video. I guess this is one instance where it’s okay to look a gift horse in the mouth. Hidalgo.
